Daily 5 in Kindergarten - First 5 Days

Hi friends, this post is for those who would like to see what the first few days of the Daily 5 look like in my kindergarten classroom.  This year will be my 4th year using the Daily 5! What can I say - I love it! I feel it has made a HUGE difference in the way I teach and manage my classroom. I have less behavior problems and students reading and writing like I have never seen before!

Here is a document that you can use if you would like..the first 5 days of the Daily 5 in my K class.  Please leave a comment if you would like more clarification. Click on the picture to download your own copy.

This is a picture of 2 "good spots" for Read to Self.
I take pictures of "good spots" for students to sit in around the room. Then I make a poster of all the spots and rotate my students clips around the poster so each of the students have a chance to sit in all the different spots. Once we have them all down I do allow them to choose a spot but I don't tell them about that - shhhh! Here are the books I use but you definitely can use other ones.

The other item I use are chimes. My kinder kiddos get use to what that sound means and they freeze and listen to directions. When my students first start I pick out 5 books for them and put them in their book boxes. Each book box has a picture of them on it.You can see in the picture below. That helps with easy transitions.  I help them pick out their books for awhile.

Here they are busy with Read to Self

Here is the stamina graph I will be using this year since our theme is superheroes! Click on the picture for your copy. I laminate the graph and we fill in each day as we build our stamina. The cute clip art is from Creative Clips! (Just love her) When the kindergarten class reaches 20 minutes our Principal comes in and reads her book with us! Yeah! They are so excited and PROUD!

3 ways to read with SUPERHEROES!
I don't have a picture of my Read to Self I chart. We create this together every year. I make it on chart paper and review it daily until I feel they have it down. Then I will review it when we need to. I hope this helps. It does seem overwhelming at first ....take your time....and you will see ....it does work! In a few weeks after building up their stamina I will then introduce Word Work next.

  1. Love the book connections. On one of the first days of building stamina I also show a video clip of Ernie and Bert. I can't remember the name of the clip, but it has Bert wanting to read and Ernie being very distracting. It is really fun for the class to point out how Ernie was not making good choices.

  6. Hi! Thank you so much for posting this! It has helped me a lot as a new teacher. Do you have any posts about how you introduce the other stations of daily 5 and the management side of it?
